temple, situated at top of the famous Jakhu hill of Simla, is dedicated to
Hindu deity Hanuman. It is hardly 2 kms east from the Ridge and is an uphill
climb through the beautiful deodar trees. Jakhu temple is located at an amazing
height of 2455 meters (8000 feet) above the sea level and is situated on the
highest peak in Shimla that offers a panoramic view of the Shivalik Ranges and
the town of Sanjauli. You can go to the temple on foot (a steep climb) from
Ridge (path behind the church) or can hire a pony/horse. Taxis are available
too. The scenic view that surrounds this beautiful temple is absolutely breath
taking and splendid.
The jakhoo temple
has an interesting legend goes that during Ramayan period, Ram-Ravan war in
Lanka, Lakshman was seriously wounded by Veer Ghatini Amogh Shakti used by
Ravan’s son Meghnad (Indrajeet) and as per told by Ravan’s kingdom Lanka’s Raj
Vaidhya (Royal Doctor) Sushen a particular Sanjeevani Buti is available only on
Dronachal Parvat in the Himalayas that could cure & alive Lakshman but
should come before the day-break. Pawanputra Hanuman was sent to get that herb
from the lofty mountains. Upon reaching at Himalayas, Mahabali Hanuman couldn't
make out as to which booti was the Sanjeevani so he dug up & lifted the
entire Dronachal mountain and flew back to where Lakshman was lying injured.
After
Lakshman was cured, as per requested by Sushen Vaidhya, Mahaveer Hanuman went
back to place the Dronachal Giri in its original site. He rested on top of the
Jakhu hill for some time. It is said that the top of the hill got flattened due
to Balwan Hanuman's weight ! The temple has been built around the place that is
supposed to have the footprints of Veer Hanuman. It is a highly revered
religious place of Shimla and devotees throng in huge numbers to pray Lord
Hanuman. The shrine is a hotspot for monkeys who flock here in great numbers
and generously accept eatables that are given to them by devotees and tourists.
Jakhoo temple is mostly popular for the Hanuman statue that is ranked third into all over India. You can also take a visit of these places from Jalandhar to Shimla by your preference.
